My husband has this wonderful gift. He can step outside our trailer and meet somebody, strike up a conversation and have a new friend. Voila'!  Are you kidding me? For me this is more like work. If somebody starts a conversation with ME then it's a piece of cake. I can do that! And because I haven't mastered his art, I miss my friends. Add to that the fact that my kids live in different States for the 1st time in my life, does not help either. Joes kids too. I call them MY kids. After having them in my life for 6 years, I  love them just as if they were mine. They all are beautiful adults, and it's hard to only see them every now and then. I miss the in betweens of their lifes. This part is extremely hard. I wonder if I ever get used to it. I cannot relate to people who are happy with the fact that their kids no longer live near them. I am not one of them. And I never will be. Oddly enough I have now turned into one of "those" people that call their d

Life on the road is different

A lot of things are going thru my mind tonight. Most of the time we stay at camp grounds or State parks. Tonight we happen to be en 'route to our next destination and are staying the night at a halfway point.  I am sitting here in a Walmart parking lot  looking out my livingroom window, not far from Lake Tahoe in Nevada on this beautiful sunny September afternoon.  I am reflecting back on the last 8 weeks of my new gypsy life. The life that my husband and I chose very willingly. Is it what I thought it would be? Is it what I was hoping it would be? It's what you make of it. I am a firm believer that we are not the victim of our circumstances. We make choices and if we don't like them, then we need to adjust them. A close and caring friend of the family wrote us this beautiful letter not too long ago, and how true it is! "Dear Ulrike and Joe, You are now seeing Phase One of your new life more clearly. It's the Discovery Phase wherein you begi

Mobile pets

How boring our travels would be if it wasn't for the presents of our sweet furry (and in our case also feathered) pet family. At times it's stressful to share our 280 sf with extra paws that like to place themselves in our way most of the time. Peanut (in picture below), lovingly referred to as the human puppy,  cannot imagine placing his royal behind on any other surface but our steps; or any for that matter. Making it almost impossible to navigate around him. Then there's the birdcage for Crazy Bird, our cockatoo. Luckily, he adjusted to his small version of living space just as much as us humans have, too. Of course life would be wayyy too normal, if Crazy Bird was just your average Cockatoo.  Oh no, you guessed. Wrong! This one is a self-mutalator, sadly enough.  Yes, we've been dealing with his special needs for many years. In the picture below you happen to see him in a rare moment without his soft collar, that he normally has to wear so

Learning from failure

Image
As new full time RV'ers we are learning from mistakes as we go. When we joined "The RV Bunch" and shared photos of our finished trailer, we received an overwhelming (in a good way that is...) 3100 likes and almost a thousand comments. A bunch of people asked how we secure all the decor etc. when travelling. Many people assumed that we stay in one place because we have a lot of decor! Heck no I shall say to that! Our decor and the fact that we chose to furnish our tiny home with our own furniture is the main reason why we feel so at home now, that we live in this space full time.  You may also ask (after seeing our pictures), how in the world we manage to secure it all! It's a learning process, but we are slowly (and a few times real quick) seeing what works and what doesn't.  After jamming our furniture all together to avoid it from moving, Joe secured each piece with mainly l-brackets.        The walk-in closet took a little longer a

Behind the scenes

It seemed like all we did with all of our free time was fix up the trailer. Endlessly. We were tired! The transitioning process took 10 months. Here are some behind the scenes pictures... ... Peanut is tired of watching me paint the future floors. Joe is getting ready to build the walk-in closet underneath the king sized loft.  Shelter from the sun and rain while prepping the future floors.  In the works:   Future bathroom barn-themed pocket doors. Dissessemled closet doors are getting painted. Everything got taken apart.                                            The mess! Joe at work. Bird is helping too! Or is he? The bedroom built-ins before we removed them. Everything with a new coat of paint. Kitchen cabinets have been taken off to get painted. The bathroom barn doors are finished!  All the kitchen cabinet doors in the works. The upper cabinets got painted, too. The kitchen  counter t
